This course is designed for people who wish to improve their numeracy skills either because they never gained a formal qualification or because they have not used mathematics for a long time. The course assumes no previous knowledge and takes the learner to the point where conventional courses, such as GCSEs or NVQs, can be tackled with confidence. Interactive Mathematics builds from the very basics of counting and arithmetic, to establish a robust and thorough basis from which the learner can be launched into further study and/or application. In particular, the course covers fractions, decimal numbers, percentages, ratios, negative numbers, numbers of diffent sizes, significant figures, estimation and algebra. Techniques are introduced in the context of describing practical situations, and applications in the real world are discussed. The approach throughout is relaxed and accessible, but underlined by a rigorous attention to detail. A modular structure allows learners to chose their own point of entry into the course and obtain maximum benefit from the advantages of open learning. The course is supported by a workbook which may be used for practice away from the computer, for revision or as a pre-test to find the appropriate point of entry into the course.
