How it works

Whilst the radiation portal monitor is unoccupied, the system continuously measures the background radiation. Once occupied, the system automatically switches to measure the foreground and compares this with the background.

The system achieves a very high level of sensitivity through the use of scintillation detectors feeding data to a microprocessor employing algorithms specially designed for the detection of low energy gamma shielded sources.

The sensors are connected to a control panel providing audible and visible alarms although a computer connection can alert staff discreetly while security personnel are alerted remotely.

Data can be downloaded for digital storage or print out. Redeem™ has a spectrum analysis capability to determine the type and level of radiation detected. This enables the system to carry out isotope recognition and indicate which isotope may be present.

Other features include a NORM filter to identify shipments which are naturally radioactive and position-in-load indicator when a radioactive source is detected.

A system can comprise of up to eight detection heads to give optimum coverage of the load – for example on a weighbridge, road or rail terminal.

The control unit can be programmed to bring down a barrier to bar onward progress if required. This feature can be extended with options to include vehicle ANPR and microwave transmission of data.

Corus Northern Engineering Services (CNES) are an engineering and contracting arm of Corus, providing engineering support to the manufacturing and process industries.

CNES can offer a wide range of engineering skills across many diverse processes. Continuing research and development takes place at our research facility at Swinden Technology Centre in Rotherham.

CNES seek to practically demonstrate a continual commitment to product development and performance.

Corus is proud of its safety record, and has a continuing commitment to maintaining safe working practices when working on site. The company is also ISO 9001 registered and holds Investors in People accreditation.

Redeem™ was originally developed as part of a research project sponsored by the Commission of European Communities, in response to the problems of orphan isotopes and their melting in steelworks.
