![]() With over 400 wagons at one site, Corus has a continuous need for overhauling and re-engineering of its rolling stock. This service extends outside Corus to other steel industries and mainline freight companies. The efficient movement of raw materials, intermediate products, by-products and finished goods around Corus' heavy-duty rail systems means freight wagons need keeping in safe working condition. Bogie overhaul Bogie overhaul is carried out at Corus, beginning with removal from the truck, assessment of the scope work and dismantling into component parts. The bogie parts are then cleaned and inspected, the frames are blast cleaned and then qualified staff carry out NDT to the frames and wheelsets. Where necessary, the frames are refabricated or upgraded and the wheelsets are given ultrasonic inspection and tyres either replaced or reprofiled on our in house wheel turning lathe. Bearing seatings and brake discs are similarly reconditioned or replaced. Bogies are then reassembled using new bearings, seals and other components before being built back into the vehicle. Frames and chassis There is potential for high levels of wear and tear, bending and breakage of frames and chassis when the main wagon freight is steel slabs, blooms and billets. These undergo rigorous NDT to determine the future demands on the vehicle and the chassis is upgraded accordingly. | |
