Other rail services

Other rail services Corus offer include the following:

  • Radio-controlled locos
  • Deadman control
  • Intelligent rail points
  • Rail weld test module

Radio-controlled locos

A remote radio-controlled system specially developed for railway use has allowed the end of the traditional operating arrangements at the Corus integrated steelworks at Scunthorpe, where teams of a driver and a shunter worked the 32 locos.  The new system halves the number of people required, by placing the fail-safe remote radio control in the hands of one operator, who works at ground level.

Deadman Control

CNES has introduced a key safety feature into a customer's fleet of locomotives.  The electronic Deadman Safety Device (DSD) was developed to solve the safety operational issue regarding locomotives, which could be set in motion and run without any further driver input.

The modification to the locomotive control system includes a safety circuit (DSD circuit) that requires the operator to press and release a pedal or an illuminated push button at regular intervals, to show they are alert and in control.  If they fail to do this, the system automatically stops the locomotive.

Intelligent rail points

Corus is constantly striving to ensure Health and Safety operation on its railways meets current legislation and best practice.  CNES engineers have developed an Intelligent System which monitors and controls rail points and maintains surveillance on the condition of these switches.

This benefits the loco driver by giving visual confirmation from a red/ green light indicator as they approach a junction, so they know that points are in a valid configuration.  It also allows recording of the status and events of each monitored point and is a substitute for lever operational points, thus removing the physical aspect of work.

Rail weld test module

CNES has developed a bespoke self-contained unit to test the integrity of welded joints on railway lines.  The totally enclosed modular design delivers accurate results combined with all the personnel protection required for a fixed factory facility.  The container-mounted design can easily be adapted for road or railway vehicle mounting.
