Feasibility study: iron ore development, Middle East This project represents Corus Consulting's largest involvement in the field of resource development. In the early phases large scale geological and mineralogical investigations were carried out to define the orebody. Subsequently, a number of bulk samples were extracted and tested to determine the most suitable process route to produce a high grade concentrate suitable for pelletising and use in direct reduction ironmaking. The project involved construction of a pilot scale beneficiation plant on site and extensive programmes of testwork at research centres around the world. Full feasibility studies were completed, including unique process design parameters for commercial operations. Project assessment and tender appraisal, Australia Corus Consulting carried out an assessment of a large magnetite iron ore deposit in the Pilbara region of Western Australia as the basis of a 5 Mt/y combined product operation involving DR-grade pellets, HBI (hot briquetted iron), slabs and hot rolled coil. Turnaround plan and operations assistance, South Africa Corus Consulting carried out a detailed review of existing mining operations and future plans. The review highlighted the problems with the main ore source and suggested immediate transfer to the alternative resource. Sintering testwork had shown that the new ore could be used to produce acceptable sinter but that the addition of lump ore from existing stocks would improve the product. Technical appraisal of raw material supplies, Egypt The work involved an assessment of existing mining operations and current/potential performance. The ore is typified by low iron/high silica and has high levels of alkalis, barium and manganese. A number of possible improvements were suggested including: selective mining, beneficiation and partial replacement with imported ores. Assessment of iron ore sourcing options, India Corus Consulting were commissioned to determine the suitability of a proposed new mining operation in Southern India with reference to the many existing nearby operations. Our client had identified a potential site for an iron ore mine and beneficiation plant designed to support a pellet plant and subsequent steelmaking operation in the region and wanted to compare the quality and cost of iron ore from their own mine with both imported ore and other locally available iron ore. Additional fieldwork was also required to determine possible transport routes and costs for imported ores. Pre-privatisation study, Latin America As part of a pre-privatisation study we were asked, by a potential major investor, to carry out an appraisal of iron ore and coal mines. Recommendations were made with regard to improving product quality and reducing production costs. Review of domestic iron ore supplies, Yugoslavia As part of a major Sector Study of all of the steelworks in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, Corus Consulting carried out a review of the current operations, and future prospects, of a number of iron ore mining operations throughout the region. Most of the domestic iron ore production was low grade and contained high levels of impurities. A number of improvements were suggested which focused mainly on making better use of the existing beneficiation plant and equipment. |
