A depth of experience has been developed within Corus, through the application of a company-wide revert strategy. This is based firstly on minimisation followed by reuse, recycling in existing units and low cost processing where necessary. The strategy covers both Integrated and Electric Arc Furnace EAF steelmaking. There is also extensive knowledge on final treatments targeting 'zero landfill' for all revert materials.
Corus Approach
-
Characterise Material Streams
-
Generate Revert database
-
Implement direct recycling
-
Application of hydrocyclones
-
BF injection
-
Waste Oxide Briquetting for BOS, BF and EAF
-
BOS extraction of zinc
-
Zinc recovery processing
The experience gained allows rapid assessment of technologies suitable to optimise revert recycling under the specific conditions of each site. Synergy between processes can be exploited to maximise recycling giving a direct environmental benefit with a minimum of capital or operating costs and in many cases provide rapid capital pay back when landfill costs are taken into account.
Once a strategy is developed, implementation can be staged with each progressive step further reducing the amount of material being landfilled.
Services Provided
Based on the company’s experience, Corus can offer support in revert recycling. This can range in scope from a full study and development of a specific site strategy, to identification of options for an individual material stream.
|
Typical services are:
- Benchmarking of revert generation
- Identification of operational changes to reduce revert generation
- XRF monitor for fume reduction trials in BOS or EAF
- Support to characterise and quantify material streams
- Site or company-wide recycling strategy
- Corus’ low cost hydrocyclone technology
- Assessment of agglomeration options
- Operational experience of recycling through waste oxide briquetting in the BOS and EAF, as coolant or thermally neutral material
- Studies on zinc enrichment in the BOS
- Treatment of oily materials in BF and BOS
- Report on current options for high zinc materials
- Independent assessment of third party waste management solutions
|
Benefits:-
- Reducing costs by recovering and re-using compatible material (i.e. recovery of iron or carbon units) substituting other purchased raw materials
- Reduction of landfill and therefore disposal costs
- Compliance with environmental regulations and standards
- Creation of good public relations as an environmentally aware company
- Provision of improved working environment
