Friction and Wear Assessment

Friction arises in all areas of contact in the sheet metal forming process. This affects the development of stress and strain across the formed part. In addition, the contact between sheet metal and forming tools can also cause wear.

We provide two tests to assess the performance of lubricants, tool and sheet coatings:

  • The linear friction test, using a common technique in which a metal strip is drawn between tools (flat-on-flat to simulate the blankholder region, or flat-on-round to simulate draw-bead pressures and accelerate galling wear).
  • The rotational friction testing assesses frictional stability at a range of speeds/pressures.
